Lily’s Passage Discussion Guide

  1. What is the significance of the title Lily’s Passage? (See floriography appendix for guidance if necessary.)
  2. How do the botanical themes of floriography and herbal healing affect the story? What is something surprising or new you learned from this element?
  3. At the beginning of the book, Farrah longs for a different life. Have you ever desired to be in a different situation than where you are? What happened?
  4. Early in the story, Asken feels burdened by guilt. Have you ever felt the weight of circumstances outside of your control? What was the result?
  5. Over the course of the story, Farrah and Asken both undergo significant transformations. What are some of those changes? Can you relate to either or both characters in your personal life?
  6. How do the events at Lunasa change each of the main characters?
  7. Consider a side character from the novel—Selah, Pyrniel, Dawn, Judah, Ruthie, Lonnie, Valesha, Celosia, Koll. How does this particular character complement or contrast either Asken or Farrah? What role does this character play in the story as a whole?
  8. Towards the end of the book, Asken realizes his beliefs have changed significantly and acts at great personal risk. Have you ever taken a stand for something you believe in, even if it was costly? What happened?
