Found Objects: Lent 2024, Week 5

Nothing encapsulates my week more than the piles of clean laundry sitting around my room in baskets, waiting to be folded and put away. Coming back from a trip and re-entering routine takes longer with each additional child, a fact I’m intensely aware of these past days.

Like children, sometimes we find ourselves floundering when our plans get upturned. But life is an exercise in trust that God’s provision goes beyond what we can see at the moment and extends into a future that we can’t yet imagine.

Dice | Day 23
With just one flick of the wrist
Turns are determined as easily
As a game
Counting the numbers and
Adding the ways
Each step comes about
Is this life,
Just a handful of dice
On the table
In random array?
Or is it something more,
Than chance?

New Growth | Day 24
No matter how dead I may feel
There’s always room for
New shoots to make their way
Through soil and darkness
To light
Reaching towards what gives life
And ignoring all thoughts otherwise
This instinct, to thrive
When all hope seems lost
And terrain lies fallow and barren
Like a seed planted deep within us
Destined to awaken
At our Maker’s calling

Blueprint | Day 25
When my plans get sideswiped
Like a clearing of the workspace
I must once again begin
With an ear to hear
And eyes to see
The road that lies ahead
Because a map doesn’t help
When you’re already lost
Nor does a blueprint lend aid
When the work is abandoned

Laundry | Day 26
When all my worries
Swirl around in my brain
A load of doubts
And needless cares
Trying to clog up my life
I take them to the laundromat
to be aired out
An endless cycle of
Wash, dry, fold, repeat

Little Feet | Day 27
Let me lead them in gentleness,
Show them the way to go
Guiding their way
Until they’ve grown
Teaching them to love You
And follow Your paths
To grow near to You
Not wandering astray
Let me show them how to love
As You did
Like a father instructs and corrects
Like a mother’s compassionate touch
Like a child’s trusting heart
With faith to outlast all

Journey | Day 28
Though we may take different paths
The road often feels the same
White lines and street signs
Red lights and roadside sights
Journeying along with others
Whose lives cross ours for a time
Some fall by the wayside
And others finish alongside
Sometimes we must take the detour
When the signals lead us elsewhere
Always trusting in our Guide
To lead us ever onward
