Found Objects: Lent 2024, Week 2

Some weeks we don’t have a choice but to engage. Sickness, busyness, and parental challenges aside, we must press on in spite of the obstacles. It’s been that kind of week for me. Still, though I find myself caught up in the whirlwind of life, I also must make time to be still and hear the voice of God.

Radio Static | Day 5
When all the little things
Add up to buzzing in my brain
Sounding so much like
Radio static
I can’t help but imagine
Pushing away the white noise
Like the touch of a button
As if turning down the volume
On my thoughts
Was as simple as
Spinning a dial

Lemons | Day 6
These simple fruits,
So bright and fresh,
Deceive the unaware soul
At once, so tempting
Yet so unpalatable
Unless mixed with other things
But the lesson is simple
And far-reaching—
That discontentment is sour
When left alone
For it must be tempered
With praise

Chalk | Day 7
We draft our plans
Laid with intricacies and detail
Far-reaching vision of the future
Moving parts working together
As one machine
Our plans, so carefully constructed
But all of chalk
So when the first rain comes
From the hand of God
There’s nothing left to show
But bare sidewalk
Washed clean of our clutter

Morning Mug | Day 8
When it’s past noon by the time
I finish my morning coffee
The clock stares back at me,
Mocking my efforts to tame it
No amount of aspirations
Lists or good intentions
Can bring time under my rein
For some days
Are out of my hands
And slip through my fists
Like water
But at least my days remain
In control of One greater than I

Sidewalk Weeds | Day 9
The weeds spring up
Through cracks in the sidewalk
As if blooming in concrete
Is the most natural thing in the world
We could take a lesson
From these simple plants
That resilience is born
From adversity
And growth occurs
Wherever the seed falls

Dishwater | Day 10
When the trials of the day
Weigh heavy on my mind
Feeling so much like
Crusted on old food
I scrub away the grime,
Let the debris fall away
And swirl down the sink
In a stream of happy suds
