Found Objects: Lent 2024, Week 7

Easter came and went, and the season of Lent along with it. I always feel refreshed after spending intentional time writing poetry during this time, even if my body needs space to recover from a long and busy weekend.

The thing I love about Easter is that the holiday is only the beginning of celebration. While we take time to remember Jesus’ sacrifice on this day, his resurrection is relevant all year long. I don’t need lilies and hymns to be joyful about new life—I can rejoice all year long.

I pray as the Easter season comes to a close that the peace of Christ remains in your life. He is the light in the darkness, the hope for all the world.

This is the final installment in a series of posts. Check out previous weeks below.

Fortress | Day 35
You are
A shelter for the weak
A refuge from the storm
A fortress for those who wait
And a stronghold for the battle
Your walls never crumble
Your gates never fail
The bricks and mortar holding true
In peace and war
In calm and storm
Your doors remain steadfast
Only opening for the earnestly seeking

Stones | Day 36
The cold rain comes down in bursts
Unusual for this time of year
But as often as I complain about the wet
I really don’t mind the weather
How beautiful the city looks
Under cover of darkness and mist
Left behind by the evening storm
And I can’t help but reflect
On your words spoken centuries ago
That even if we found the defiance
To be silent
The rocks would cry out their praise
In the presence of their king

Cleaning House | Day 37
Time to tidy up the clutter
And sweep the floors
Wipe down counters
And close cupboard doors
I’ll put the house to bed
Let the dust settle
After a hard day of work
Getting my mind in order

Citrus Blooms | Day 38
The sweet smell of citrus flowers
Carried on the breeze
Reaches me over the car’s open door
As the chatter of children in the backseat
Creates a comfortable babble
The daylight is fading
Just like the stress of a week
Of mountaintops and valleys
Because for just a moment
My soul is still
In the presence of my Maker

Easter Eggs | Day 39
On the outside
They grab for attention
With brightly colored shells
Just like so many misguided people
Who focus so much
On outward appearance
That they forget
We’re all the same inside

Windchimes | Day 40
When the wind blows
It sends chicken feathers swirling
And causes the soft chime of music
To play
A sound like homecoming
A sound like roots
A sound like the future calling
Because when it comes to home
We often don’t realize
What we have
Until we’ve left it behind
