Barefoot Blog
Being barefoot has certain social connotations. We may be seen as informal, at ease, or perhaps that we’re in a familiar setting. In some cultures it is polite to remove your shoes before crossing a threshold. And often, only when barefoot may we approach holy ground.
My life has been an exercise in searching for the sacred in our modern world. Some days it feels harder than others to find a place where I can breathe and be fully engaged in Truth.
And yet.
We are called to engage with our Savior in the easy times and in the difficult ones. Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus’ disciples, Mary, the woman at the well–all were called to a higher purpose than they ever imagined before they met the Lord. By saying ‘yes’ to the call, their lives became richer than they ever would have been on their own power.
So, I’m faced with a choice. I can ignore the calling of the Spirit in my life and go on living my own way. Or, I can daily make the choice to approach a sacred God, barefoot in heart and soul, and to engage with the One who calls me to a higher life.

I’ll Take My Coffee Lukewarm: Thoughts on Productivity from the Trenches of Motherhood
A common response I get when people find out I’ve written (and am publishing) a book is “how do you have time?” Usually the question comes from other moms juggling their own responsibilities and is followed by “I could never do that.” Though I don’t believe everyone is called to write a book, I do…

Acceptable Conformity
Someone called my book cover generic. Here’s why I’m okay with that. I’m a chronic nonconformist. The worst insult someone could have given me growing up was that I was just like everybody else. (Let’s face it—that’s still the most stinging statement to receive in my adult life.) I loved rubrics in school because they…

You’ve Got Mail: How Authenticity Cuts Through Advertising Noise
I receive a lot of newsletters in my email, and many of the author ones offer writing advice. Makes sense, right? A writer talking about… writing. But one thing I often ponder is “what audience is this author trying to reach?” Because most readers probably don’t care much about the craft of writing. They just…

Purpose in the Holding Pattern
I don’t care for flying. Motion sickness aside, I hate the feeling of being out of control of my circumstances. Though I may trust the pilot, my instincts tell me I should be where my feet could run from danger. But there’s no running on a plane. And sometimes, the aircraft doesn’t land when it’s…

Steward of Solitude
As a stay-at-home-mom and writer, I have plenty of time alone. Even time spent with my kids can be “alone time.” But though my days are filled with solitary endeavors, I feel just as drained at bedtime as if I worked an office job. This seems like a contradiction—how can an introvert feel spent after…
