Barefoot Blog
Being barefoot has certain social connotations. We may be seen as informal, at ease, or perhaps that we’re in a familiar setting. In some cultures it is polite to remove your shoes before crossing a threshold. And often, only when barefoot may we approach holy ground.
My life has been an exercise in searching for the sacred in our modern world. Some days it feels harder than others to find a place where I can breathe and be fully engaged in Truth.
And yet.
We are called to engage with our Savior in the easy times and in the difficult ones. Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus’ disciples, Mary, the woman at the well–all were called to a higher purpose than they ever imagined before they met the Lord. By saying ‘yes’ to the call, their lives became richer than they ever would have been on their own power.
So, I’m faced with a choice. I can ignore the calling of the Spirit in my life and go on living my own way. Or, I can daily make the choice to approach a sacred God, barefoot in heart and soul, and to engage with the One who calls me to a higher life.

Keeping an Indie Soul in a Pop World
I love indie music. There’s something special about finding an artist who’s relatively unknown and connecting with their message. Sure, sometimes it sounds a bit rough or unpolished, but that honesty and grittiness is what draws me to the genre in the first place. There’s no pretense because there’s no pressure from a big label…

Choosing the Narrow Road
Being an introverted mom is a challenge. There’s always someone needing me, pulling me away, vying for my attention. I can get sucked into the cycle of unproductivity because I keep getting disrupted when I try to focus on something. And as I mentioned in a previous post, it’s already hard enough to focus on…

Ripping Out the Seams
I don’t do many posts about writing craft, but since the line edits just finished up on my novel, I thought it might be fitting to touch on it. Many people probably don’t realize how much rewriting goes into a book. Before that book hits the shelves, it undergoes dozens of readings and changes from…

When the Ordinary Comes Knocking
I’ve been re-reading The Screwtape Letters, and I’m once again struck by Lewis’ insight into the human condition. In one of the early letters, the demon Screwtape encourages his nephew on the effectiveness of the ordinary to draw people away from God. The ordinary has certainly been persistent in knocking at my door lately. Over…

Disciplining the Heart
Going grocery shopping is a big event now. Not that it’s one I want tickets to, but somehow I always land the VIP seating. And since I usually have a toddler in tow, I’ve gotten pretty good at saying no. We’ll pass by the candy, the seasonal items, the sugar cereal, or the fun trinkets…
