Barefoot Blog
Being barefoot has certain social connotations. We may be seen as informal, at ease, or perhaps that we’re in a familiar setting. In some cultures it is polite to remove your shoes before crossing a threshold. And often, only when barefoot may we approach holy ground.
My life has been an exercise in searching for the sacred in our modern world. Some days it feels harder than others to find a place where I can breathe and be fully engaged in Truth.
And yet.
We are called to engage with our Savior in the easy times and in the difficult ones. Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus’ disciples, Mary, the woman at the well–all were called to a higher purpose than they ever imagined before they met the Lord. By saying ‘yes’ to the call, their lives became richer than they ever would have been on their own power.
So, I’m faced with a choice. I can ignore the calling of the Spirit in my life and go on living my own way. Or, I can daily make the choice to approach a sacred God, barefoot in heart and soul, and to engage with the One who calls me to a higher life.

When God Takes You at Your Word
The valley below is scattered with thousands of tents, small campfires dotting the night. Within each tent sleeps a fierce warrior, ruthless fighters born and bred for war. The army’s target: the homeland your people have waited for generations to inhabit. As you look around at your own men, the mere 300 soldiers seems like…

Finding Contentment in Life’s Circumstances
About a year ago, my husband and I moved from a two-bedroom apartment to another two-bedroom apartment in a different complex. The previous one had a pest control problem, and without going into detail, let’s just say we couldn’t wait to pack up the baby and run. The new place (aside from being bug-free, the…

Life Update
I’ve been a bit absent the past couple of months, but I haven’t been inactive. Far from it! Aside from my many personal obligations, November is National Novel Writing Month, which means that all across the globe, writers take on the monumental task of producing 50,000 words in 30 days. I’ve attempted it in the…

Walking in Light
God often speaks to me through recurring symbols or themes. It could be a certain topic brought up by multiple people at different times, Scripture that keeps coming to mind, an image that won’t leave me alone, or a combination of these. Sometimes I know why and other times it’s a mystery until later on…

The Death of Literacy
I have fond memories of visiting the public library with my mom when I was growing up. In our town of Traverse City, Michigan, there was what my child’s mind considered to be a huge library, and perhaps it was. With multiple levels of books and media, grassy outdoors areas, puppets, and a train model…
